The Myler System for a fitting bit

Start from the horse's mouth.

To choose the right bit, it is important to start from your horse's mouth. Find
out what the thickness of the tongue is and whether your horse has much or
little space in his mouth due to a low palate, for example. In addition, make
sure your horse's teeth are well-maintained.

Overcome your horse's resistance by going 'softer' with the bit. Is your horse
resisting on his current bit? A horse in resistance can never walk relaxed on
the rein. Do you recognise any of the following points of resistance?

-running behind the rein
-coming against the hand
-getting on the forehand
-walking through the hand
-having an overactive mouth
-falling away over the shoulder

In case of resistance look for a softer solution, some examples could be:
-Falling away over the shoulder: choose a bit with independent side-action.
-Coming against the hand: try a bit with pressure on the tongue but with tongue
freedom.
-Getting behind the rein: try a bit with less pressure on the tongue and
independent side-action.

Features of the Myler bit

1. Tongue clearance / forward curved mouthpiece Ensures that the horse can
swallow unhindered and invites the horse to follow. Many traditional bits lie
flat on the tongue, which restricts swallowing and often leads to resistance.
With the curved mouthpieces, the Myler bits distribute the pressure more evenly
over the tongue.

2. Copper inlay strips. Most Myler mouthpieces are made of stainless steel with
copper inlay strips. These copper inlays promote salivation in the horse.

3. Limited pressure Teaches the horse to relax on the rein and stay in his
'comfort zone'. With rein pressure, the mouthpiece presses on the layers and
tongue. As soon as the horse reins, the pressure drops off and the horse learns
to maintain this 'pressure-free' position in reins.

4. Independent movement The independent lateral movement of the bit allows only
1 side of the mouthpiece to move which provides a clear signal. Prevents falling
away over the shoulder and promotes the length flexion.

Switching to a Myler bit.

When switching to a Myler bit, treat your horse the same way you train your
horse - with time, patience and repetition. Let the horse seek and release the
pressure on his own and let him do his own following. Often, you will soon feel
whether the bit works for your horse or not.
